Thanks for choosing Vodafone, began a cheery letter among the pile of mail awaiting my return from holiday last week.
It went on to confirm that I would be paying £64 a month for my new top-of-the-range handset, with details of the bank account the direct debit would be drawn from.
The only problem was, I had not opened an account with Vodafone. Nor had I agreed a credit deal with the retailer Next, despite another letter in the pile congratulating me on having done just that.
